Being an owner of CalWest Tree Service, I get multiple opportunities to spend hours maintaining and beautifying our community, one tree at a time. Despite my extensive travels across San Luis Obispo, CA, nothing feels quite like home at the heart of our city – Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.

Founded by Father Junípero Serra on September 1, 1772, this Spanish mission is more than just a historical site. It’s the namesake of our town, a testament to Saint Louis of Anjou, the Bishop of Toulouse, and, more personally, it’s a symbol of our community’s resilience and spirit.

The beauty of the Mission goes beyond its charming Spanish architecture. As you step foot onto the church grounds, you’re stepping onto a piece of history that has withstood the test of time. The atmosphere, at once serene and humbling, is akin to the quiet dignity that trees possess – a quality I’ve come to appreciate deeply in my line of work.

Each Sunday, the Mission Church comes alive with a wonderful Mass. Regardless of the weather, people from all walks of life don their best attire to attend the service, their devotion serving as a vivid reminder of the early settlers who built this town from scratch. Being part of this weekly gathering amidst the awe-inspiring arches and the meticulously maintained gardens is like rekindling a bond with our city’s roots.

However, the charm of the Mission isn’t limited to its religious events. Touring around its premises is an enlightening journey through history. The tales of sacrifice and endurance of our early settlers, who endured countless hardships to establish our beloved city, inspire gratitude and respect. This connection with our past propels me to serve our community better and honor their legacy by preserving our urban forest.

The area around the Mission has evolved over the centuries to become a bustling hub filled with an array of shops and restaurants, each one unique and delightful. Yet, despite the city’s progress, the Mission has managed to retain its historical charm and tranquility. San Luis Obispo, a city steeped in history and bursting with current vitality, is reflected in this fusion of the two eras.

With plenty of parking available, including spots designated for those using wheelchairs, it is accessible to all members of our community. We at CalWest Tree Service work hard to make sure our services are accessible to all parts of the city, and the Mission aims to do the same.

Final Thoughts

My research has helped me appreciate the similarities between the toughness of local trees and that of the city’s pioneers.
